Certification of processes : Rising Damp Treatment in Masonry

Rising damp is a widespread issue in Belgian buildings. Older houses without a waterproofing layer are particularly vulnerable, but newer constructions can also be affected due to masonry errors or deteriorated membranes.

Why this certification ?

As explained above, problems related to rising damp affect both new and older buildings for various reasons.

Buildwise describes this issue and the associated solutions in Technical Information Note 252 (NIT 252). Injecting a hydrophobic product at the base of the masonry is a proven and effective technique.

Based on NIT 252, BCCA has developed a process certification that confirms that a contractor works according to a standardized and controlled procedure, ensuring quality and correct execution. This certification scheme was developed by a working group bringing together all relevant stakeholders (specifiers, contractors, experts, and public authorities).

Scope & Purpose

The certification is built on the following pillars:

• We work with injection products that have received a technical approval (ATG) or with products whose equivalence can be demonstrated.

• The construction company's documentation and procedures for handling files—from the client's request to the verification of treatment effectiveness, including advice before or after finishing the treated walls.

• Use of appropriate execution techniques, in accordance with best practices.

• Training and competence: both the technical managers—responsible for diagnosis, treatment proposals and project follow-up—and the applicators—responsible for carrying out the injection work—must be able to provide proof of competence. More information about training is available at the BCCA Academy .
